|
|
March is Forums month at OurChurch.Com, so we're initiating this discussion to help OCC webmasters start or improve their own forums or message boards.
- Anyone have any questions about forums or message boards?
- Anyone have forums on their site and have some advise as to how to foster good discussion on them?

I have a Bronze account and would be interested in starting a Forum page. What would be the first step? And, how complicated is it to set up? |

Hi stang165,
Great question! Bronze accounts (as well as platinum, gold, and silver) have a great feature called Fantastico. Fantastico can be used to install about 50 different popular, free website applications. There are two forums available. I recommend phpBB2. That's what we use to run these forums.
So, if you log into your cPanel control panel, click the Fantastic option, and then click phpBB2, it will help you install and configure forums in just a few very quick and easy steps.
If you run into any problems or have any other questions, just let us know.

You're welcome. I hope you'll report back and let us know how it goes.
Installing and configuring the forums is just the first step. The real challenge comes in stimulating conversation and getting that critical mass of participants to make the conversation interesting.

Hi Multistream,
There are several things you can do to combat spam.
1) Make sure the permissions are set on all your forums so that only registered users can post messages.
2) In the main configuration of your forums set "Enable account activation" to "user." With this setting, when a user registers they will be sent a confirmation email and be required to click a link in that email to activate their accoutn before they can post a message.
3) If you're still getting spam after doing #1 and #2, you might have to consider setting "Enable account activation" to "admin." If you do this, then a newly registered user won't be able to post a message until you approve their registration.

Paul Steinbrueck

What is the difference between the two types of Forums?
How much customization can be done in either?

Hi Jojo,
Since many of the hosting packages have changed since this last post, our Bronze package no longer includes the forum capabilities. However, our Silver and Gold hosting packages do. |
